DELPHINE DESCENDS
After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf - to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.
When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.
She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.
But to beat them, she must play their game. And she must play it better than them all.
BLACK MILK
Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.
Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.
Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:
Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...
The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…
Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…
Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...
Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

As I have been a life long Fan of Creators such as Lovecraft and Many Others, so then enjoyed your thoughts mentioned with this Video about Lovecraft and his Great Ideas put forth.. As I think You did Sum up Very Well the Concepts and Visions as how H P Lovecraft did see the World and far Beyond.... As for how we are also part of that Dark never Ending Spider Web, spread through out the Depths of the Big Black, that Always seems to Calls to Us. But then the Question, Should We Answer or invite such Shadowed Stranger from Far and Distant Places, to come and know that we are Here, as the Results of such a Meeting, might not be an Event, that would end Well for any of Us here, on this Small Blue Dot... And then as an Artist, Animator and Designer.... So also have had many thoughts and Ideas about Lovecraft and his Works. As then Projects, I too have been thinking about, so for myself also Creating a Few Small Productions of my Own... And so then many ideas I too have, for New Projects to come And though such specific ideas I see only in my Minds Third Eyes... Ideas are Coming together.. As then Very Much Enjoyed Your HP Lovecraft Video... So until I get on with those Next Potential Projects, I still then have other Images of My Works, that can be Seen, on My Gordon Strong FB Art Page... As a Very Good Day to You and All Other Lovecraft Fans....... 🐙🐙🐙

Lovecraft I believe pierced the veil of what reality was. But he clothed what he found there with horror as it did threaten his very materialistic egocentric outlook. From an occult perspective Kenneth Grant fully used the Cthulhu mythos to further the work of Aleister Crowley in exploring these unknown realms. But in modern depth psychology and in the works of the likes of Donald Hoffman, Rupert Sheldrake and Dr Anthony Stevens that placid island of Ignorance may be sinking into having to understand what lies beneath and it is everything Lovecraft wrote in terror about. You make a mistake. He wasn't born in 1980! Think that should have been 1890. Apologies for nit picking on that point.

While I enjoyed the overview of his works and cosmicism, I find it disappointing you went into his life and real world influences without mentioning once his pretty extreme racism and xenophobia. These were big and unfortunate influences on his work and important to point out, and I think you could have done so without undermining his influence if that’s what you were trying to avoid

@@IRosamelia No, I didn't see that movie. Lovecraft's stories are notoriously difficult to adapt to the big screen. I always thought it would be impossible to make the story into a movie because it would be impossible to create a color no human had ever seen. Also, all those Hollywood types have to put their "mark" on a movie from a story by a writer like Lovecraft, ruining a film. Dean Koontz's novels are also almost impossible to make into movies. One exception is "Intensity," which is a mini-series. Every time I think of that series or novel, I shudder.

@@GrottescoTeatro Yeah, The Frolic was a beauty. A story of Ligotti's that sticks in my mind the most is The Last Feast of Harlequin, which combines the history of clowns, with some of Lovecraft's themes. Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn! (some cultist had to say it) - great vid on one of the (grand)fathers of modern horror (Poe might be one of the others) - and it can well be seen that nature is totally indifferent to humanity when you consider the stupendously long ages of the Earth, so why would the greater cosmos be any different? I like to think that grain of truth really adds to the Lovecraftian viewpoint

So many people take it for granted that audiences need characters that they can relate to for the duration. But there are no such characters in anthology shows like "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits", and at least those two worked fine. Maybe audiences aren't as needy as people think they are, and "Foundation" didn't need to depart from the source material as much as it did.

Both book and series would have been better had it turned out in the end that in some distant future someone had traveled back in time to share with Nazi Germany information of Allied Troops positions as well as information on nuclear weapons in order to help Nazi Germany win the war with an attack on American east coast cities. Which in turn would pave the way for Japan to annex the West Coast Cities and other States in the west. Certainly this would have been a far better way for explaining just how such and upside down way of life could come to pass in the first place. What's more? It would have been far better to have every single season start in a new decade. This could have led up to good temporal paradox where the survivors of the resistance discovered Nazi plans to use time travel to fulfill what perceived as destiny to send someone back to WWII Germany to change history in order to create the world modern day Nazis live in which they rule America. Just think of how much better the book and series could have been with the resistance working together to stop the Nazi Regime from going back in time in the first place. This would inadvertently created a ripping effect in order to create a brand new future for say both Frank and Juliana to return home to if they had somehow gained access to the Nazis time travel technology to go back to stop a Nazi agent or agents from changing history in the first place. Time plotting this book and series could have more easily explained the true origins of those new films which show a world still with it's problems. A world none the less better than what it was under both Nazi Riech and Japanese Empire rule!

I read this book so many years ago, and I seldom remember book plots for too many years (which lets me re-read favorites every 2-3 years and still be surprised...). This must have been something I read in the early 90's maybe, or even the late 80's. I can remember being slightly irritated about some parts, but the other stuff was just great enough to drown that. Strangely enough, the only thing I remember about the book today was how the main characters 'worried' about the nudity taboo in different versions/dimensions... And that they could move around between different universes? I think... There can't have been a heroic/fun part about it, since I never bothered to read it again, though? I keep thinking about it as something philosophical, I'm afraid.

I always like when a reviewer warns of spoilers; usually, I carry on, thinking, it's okay, I'll bear in mind etc. This time, some instinct made me skip the spoilers, and I'm so glad I did. I knew I was going to read Use of Weapons and I'd already picked up on this book being one of the best. It really is. When I reached the end, I knew I'd read one of science fiction's great novels. Not just in SF terms, but any way you consider literature. Now I've gone back to view your spoiler section, and I find I had many of the same thoughts as you did. I'd add, that I felt among the book's strong themes, the one that stood out for me was how we can never really escape what happens to us in childhood. No matter how life turns out for us, we will always feel the echoes of the joys and torments of our earliest experiences. I am going through the books very slowly and am relishing the prospect of the rest of them. But I know that if and when I reread any of them, I will first reach for Use of Weapons. It's magnificent.

His books gave me the foundation to be who I became. Silicon Valley was only beginning in his productive life, but it enabled the greatest expansion of human capability since WW2

Good list, sir! I just finished THE SIMULACRA (no, I'm not suggesting it should have made the list) and I found it filled with (over-blown with?) such insane social and technological constructs that only PKD could have written it. Plot-wise, it was more like his short stories, but he filled it with such insanity I was having fun the whole time.

Crimson World's, United Federation Marines, The Ember War and Forgotten Ruin are some of my favorites. Marko Kloss never finished Frontlines as far as I know.

In terms of storytelling, character development, world building and overall quality, it’s no competition in the slightest.

I might have read every book on that shelf behind you. I'd have also included The Dark Tower books up there. I'd wager that you've read that series too.

As Sci Fi novels/series these are all excellent choices for an engrossing read. Space Operas they ain't. EE Doc Smith provided 2 with the Lensman and Skylark Series, Harry Harrison and the Stainless Steeel Rat series is another and Piers Anthonys Bio of a Space Tyrant is a classic of the genre. Again your choices are great books/series but far from Space Operas

Sorry, but some of the books on this list could/should have been left off in favor of Larry Niven's Ringworld and it's sequel (both Hugo winner, but unlike OSC's back to back wins it took Larry 10 years to win both of his Hugo awards). However, like OSC's Enderverse, Niven's Tales of Known Space (in which both the Ringworld books are set) you have a UNIVERSE of well constructed stories many of which (as we saw in the book PAK) not only expand the universe but ADD to the books that have already been written and published, but on the books that were not only not published, but not even written yet. This is the kind of world building that several of those listed here and PRAISED for their single book 'world building' do not even approach. Niven's Tales of Known Space centers on a society in which he death penalty is being applied to lower and lower levels of crimes because the sentence is to have your body broken up in order to supply the constantly growing lust for newer, replacement part for the wealthy. In a wide ranging genre (detective, space exploration and even colonization) you have a society in which it is not always clear that the morals are universal.

They are more like essays on dumb behavior in seemingly novel backgrounds . Greg Egan was a breath of fresh air .
